Petition: U-Turn on Llandudno Library

In 2025 Conwy County Borough Council's Cabinet voted to close Llandudno's Library on Mostyn Street and deliver library services from Venue Cymru from spring 2027.

The proposals were incredibly unpopular with local residents, yet they were voted through anyway.

Now is time for the Council to rethink and u-turn on their proposals.

At the time the public and councillors were told:

  • Leaving an empty building on Mostyn Street could have a negative impact on the local economy worth £362k per year, but the Council were confident a new use would be found for the building - but no plans for the building have since been shared;
  • Moving library services out of the town centre would make them more accessible - but the Council's own Equality Impact Assessment states that relocating library services may make them less accessible for people with mobility challenges or people that use public transport;
  • Quitting the current library building would be financially beneficial to the Council - but the Council made a £653k investment in new leasing arrangements for the current library building only four years ago.

The Council cannot give up the lease on the current Library on Mostyn Street until spring 2027, and they haven't even got planning permission for their new library at Venue Cymru.

I think it's time for Conwy County Borough Council to rethink their plans to close Llandudno's Library on Mostyn Street and move library services out of the town centre.
